A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has warned that attempts to promote separatist agendas or destabilise Nigeria could worsen insecurity, empower terrorist groups, and further endanger vulnerable Nigerians, particularly Christian communities.
Moore gave the warning in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, following a fact-finding visit to Nigeria aimed at understanding the challenges surrounding insecurity and the alleged persecution of Christians.
According to him, he held extensive engagements with Nigerian government officials, church leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) across different parts of the country, especially in the North and Middle Belt regions.
“I have travelled to Nigeria and engaged in multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian officials, the Church, aid groups across the country, and internally displaced persons, to better understand the severe challenges facing Christians and other vulnerable communities,” Moore said.
He noted that during his interactions, there was no serious push for the division of Nigeria, stressing that such ideas would only worsen the suffering of ordinary citizens.
“In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country did not come up in any serious way. Efforts to embolden separatist movements only hurt vulnerable Nigerians — especially Christians in the North and Middle Belt,” he said.
Moore warned that destabilising Nigeria would embolden terrorist organisations, increase violence, and deepen the humanitarian crisis.
“A destabilised Nigeria would empower terrorists and make Christians, displaced families, and vulnerable citizens less safe — not only in Nigeria but across the entire region,” he added.
US–Nigeria Security Cooperation
The lawmaker also highlighted recent security cooperation agreements between the United States and Nigeria as a crucial step toward addressing terrorism and violent extremism.
“The United States and Nigeria have entered into a security cooperation agreement, and this is an important step in tackling insecurity and strengthening the relationship between our two nations,” Moore stated.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for stronger international support to protect civilians affected by terrorism and conflict.
“I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ — and indeed all Nigerians — who are suffering from the instability caused by terrorism. God bless you all,” he said.
Engagement with Plateau Governor
During his visit, Moore also met with Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, where discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation and finding sustainable solutions to insecurity, particularly in communities frequently affected by violent attacks.
He described the engagement as “substantive and forward-looking,” adding that it centred on protecting lives, strengthening security coordination, and supporting displaced and traumatised communities.
Moore reiterated his commitment to working closely with Nigerian authorities to address insecurity and reduce the suffering of Christians and other vulnerable groups, especially in the Middle Belt.
