What’s an Open Mic? For some, it’s a dare. For others, a temptation. And there are definitely some for whom it’s an addiction.
But for most it’s a challenge. To face the fear of speaking in public. Not just speaking in public, but sharing a creative piece in public. Your creative piece. And risk someone saying something, anything, about it that is negative.
This is what an Open Mic is, an opportunity to break through that fear. And discover that, whether or not you turn out to be the creative genius you secretly thought you were, there is still a lot of inner release to be found in not letting what you think others will think stop you from speaking up in life. That is what an Open Mic is.
And, this Friday, we will be hosting the very first of the 23 Open Mics we will be having in 2022 at the Abuja Literary Society (ALS). It is what we do, you see, provide spaces where we can share a love for the arts in all their diverse manifestations.
For that too, is also what it means to speak up. Yes. To listen to a poem, or a short story, or a song by someone, someone trembling with the effort it takes to stand in front of you, and then raising your voice to let them know that, yes, the work itself can always be better, but the spirit it takes to really, really try is never without its infinite charm.
Come, join us.
