Edo Queens win first NWFL title

by Arabella Zikora

Edo Queens have won the 2024 Nigeria Women Football League title.

The Benin Girls were crowned champions after they were held to a 1-1 draw in their final game at the NWFL Super Six playoff.

It’s the first time Edo Queens will be winning the NWFL title.

Edo Queens have now earned the right to represent Nigeria at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Emem Essien opened the scoring for Edo Queens with an acrobatic finish inside the box a minute before the half hour mark.

Bayelsa Queens rallied back with Zainab Olopade equalising four minutes after the break.

In another game that was played simultaneously, Rivers Angels missed the chance to win the title after they conceded a late equaliser against Heartland Queens.

Olamide Adugbe broke the deadlock for Rivers Angels 18 minutes from time.

Substitute Emmanuella James, however, equalised for Heartland on the dot of 90 minutes.
