Vice Chairman of the South East Constitution Review Committee, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, has expressed optimism that corruption could be completely eradicated in Nigeria’s public sector if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) maintains its current momentum.
Speaking on ARISE News on Wednesday, Nwaebonyi praised the EFCC Chairman and his team for transforming the agency from what he described as a “media trial body” into one achieving real results.
“Before now, EFCC was known more for media trials than actual convictions. But in the past two years, we’ve seen major progress — many convictions have been secured. If they sustain this pace, corruption will soon be wiped out of our public system,” he said.
He added that the EFCC enjoys a reasonable level of independence and encouraged the Commission to regularly brief Nigerians on major cases, including those where investigations show no evidence of wrongdoing.
“Law works on facts and rules. When a petition is filed, it’s the EFCC’s duty to investigate and verify. They’re doing well and should remain independent. Also, when a case has no evidence, Nigerians should be informed. Not all politicians are corrupt; many are genuinely working to move the country forward,” Nwaebonyi noted.
It would be recalled that on October 16, 2025, the Presidency commended the EFCC for its remarkable progress since inception. The Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, lauded the Commission’s transformation during a visit to EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
“You should be proud of yourselves,” Usman said. “EFCC has grown tremendously since 2000, becoming one of the most effective anti-corruption institutions in the country.”
