Abuja (Precise Post) The Chairperson Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Senator Uche Ekwunife has advocated for research into the development of local remedies by the  Ministry of Science and Technology to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic

Ekwunife spoke on the sidelines of the budget defense of the Ministry of Science and Technology which held at the national assembly on Thursday.

She said  “ We cannot continue to rely on research from outside this country, some of these diseases are territorial and being territorial we have to find our own local solution , the COVID in Nigeria may not be  the same proportion with the COVID outside the country,  so we have research center’s that can give us solution to what we are looking for , I don’t see  reasons why Ghana can find solution and Nigeria cannot find solution , it boils down to funding we need to fund these agencies to do their work, we have people who can do the work they have the capacity and the knowledge all they need is the conducive atmosphere and funding to ensure they perform according to their mandate ”

Ekwunife had earlier opined that the mandate of the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development agency, which is domiciled under the Ministry of Science and Technology have as part of its mandate, the provision of  alternative medicine to the down trodden populace in Nigeria. “I think that agency is meant to provide alternative medicine to the down trodden, where the medi-care is affordable.

The essence of government is to provide security and welfare, and in providing welfare, health is very critical and important and research into alternative medicine is equally important too, that is actually why that agency was created in the first place and you cannot create such an important agency without funding it
