Electoral reforms critical to strengthening democracy – APC chieftain

LAGOS – Mr Akanni Seriki, a member of the Lagos State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), representing Epe Division, has lauded ongoing  reforms aimed at strengthening  democratic process and deepening public confidence in elections.

 

Seriki  spoke an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Sunday.

 

He said that electoral reforms were  a necessary step toward promoting transparency, accountability and credible elections.

 

He stated  sustained improvements in the nation’s electoral system would enhance citizens’ confidence in democratic institutions, reduce electoral disputes and encourage greater participation in the political process.

 

According to him, credible elections remain the foundation of every thriving democracy, stressing that all stakeholders must support reforms capable of guaranteeing free, fair and peaceful elections.

 

“Nigeria’s democracy can only flourish when the electoral process is transparent, credible and acceptable to all participants.

 

“Electoral reforms are not optional; they are essential to nation-building,” he said.

 

Seriki commended the National Assembly and other relevant institutions for considering measures to improve the country’s electoral framework, urging lawmakers to ensure that the reforms were holistic .

 

“The reforms should be people-centred and designed to strengthen the independence of electoral institutions.

 

“While promoting fairness and inclusiveness in the democratic process,” he added.

 

The APC chieftain also called on political parties, civil society organisations and the electorate to support initiatives that would enhance electoral integrity.

 

He noted that democracy thrives when citizens actively participate and respect the rule of law.

 

“Political leaders must place national interest above personal ambition.

 

“A credible electoral process is the collective responsibility of government, political parties and the electorate,” he said.

 

Seriki appealed to Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding and committed to democratic values before, during and after elections, saying that peaceful conduct by all stakeholders remained indispensable to national stability.

 

He expressed optimism that with sincere implementation of the reforms, Nigeria would continue to consolidate its democracy and strengthen good governance at all levels(NAN).
