JOS – The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, on Monday donated foodstuff to vulnerable households in Plateau.
Dr Bernard Doro, the Minister incharge of the ministry said the intervention was part of social safety nets of the federal government.
Doro explained that the initiative is aimed at tackling food insecurity, acute malnutrition and hunger among residents of the state.
He lamented that climate-related disruptions, insecurity, and displacement had placed enormous strain on household livelihoods, food systems and social stability.
“For many families, particularly in vulnerable communities, the consequences were visible.
“Rising food insecurity, malnutrition among children, reduced household incomes and increased pressure on already stretched community resources have been a major challenge.
“Women, children, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities bore the greatest burden of these crises.
“It is against this backdrop that today’s intervention becomes not only necessary but urgent.
“This distribution of food and nutrition assistance represents a decisive step by this administration to cushion the immediate impact of food insecurity, stabilise vulnerable households and support communities to rebuild their livelihoods,”he said.
Doro, however, said that while humanitarian relief is essential in moments of crisis, lasting stability required a more integrated and forward-looking approach.
“This intervention is not a one-off activity; it is part of a broader national strategy to build a responsive, coordinated, and resilient humanitarian and poverty reduction system.
“A system that restores dignity, strengthens livelihoods, and ensures lasting inclusion for vulnerable Nigerians.
“This is, therefore, not simply about food on the table today; it is about restoring dignity, rebuilding livelihoods and ensuring that every vulnerable Nigerian can move from humanitarian assistance to lasting economic opportunity.
“That is the promise of the President Bola Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda,” Doro said.
Speaking, Gov. Caleb Mutfwang, who described the initiative as laudable, thanked President Tinubu for the intervention.
H, particularly, thanked the President for giving proper attention toward tackling the challenges currently confronting the state.
He said the state government had put modalities on ground toward addressing poverty through agriculture.
“As a state government, we are also thinking that beyond this kind of intervention, that we look at how we can help people to fish and not just to eat fish.
“And that’s why this year, by God’s grace, we are procuring quite an unprecedented number of trucks of fertiliser that we are going to give at a discount to our farmers across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
“I believe that we owe the people of Nigeria the responsibility of producing food, because we are the food basket of the nation, and we will take that responsibility,”he said.
Reports that Prof. Nentewa Yilwatda,the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other dignitaries, also attended the event.(NAN)
