ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –  The Federal Government has approved the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF), a landmark initiative that will inject up to $500 million annually into research, science, technology, and innovation across Nigeria.
The approval, announced after a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, who said the Fund is designed to transform Nigeria’s research ecosystem and align scientific development with national economic priorities.
According to the government, the NRIDF will serve as a strategic financing platform aimed at strengthening collaboration among universities, research institutions, industries, and government agencies to accelerate innovation and sustainable development.
The initiative is expected to address longstanding challenges confronting Nigeria’s research and development sector, including inadequate funding, weak commercialisation of research outputs, limited innovation infrastructure, and insufficient coordination among critical stakeholders.
Under the new framework, the Fund will support competitive research grants, establishment of innovation infrastructure, commercialisation of scientific discoveries, and development of science and technology talents across the country.
The Federal Government noted that the programme would also promote homegrown solutions in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, energy, and digital technology, while positioning Nigeria to compete more effectively in the global knowledge economy.
The NRIDF will operate under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and will be governed by a 17-member National Council on Research and Innovation chaired by the Vice President.
Reacting to the development, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kamorudeen Yusuf, described the initiative as a direct reflection of the President’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a continental leader in innovation, research, and sustainable economic transformation.
He said the creation of the Fund demonstrates the administration’s resolve to build a knowledge-driven economy capable of generating jobs, boosting industrial productivity, and enhancing national competitiveness.
Observers say the initiative could mark a major turning point for Nigeria’s education and innovation sectors if effectively implemented, especially at a time when many African countries are intensifying investments in research, artificial intelligence, technology, and industrial development.
The development has also been welcomed by stakeholders in academia and the private sector, who believe sustained investment in research and innovation is critical to achieving long-term economic diversification and reducing dependence on oil revenues.
