A FELLOWSHIP OF NATIONS: STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY, TRADE, AND PARTNERSHIPS
An Address by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the Occasion of the Visit of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, UK Branch.

My Lords, Distinguished Colleagues, Honored Guests, and Esteemed Members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association,

It is with deep gratitude and great solemnity that I welcome you all to this citadel of democracy. We are not merely gathered as representatives of nations, but as guardians of a great and noble tradition. A tradition that has stood the test of time, one that has weathered storms, braved tempests, and yet, stands unyielding—the tradition of democracy.
You come to us not as strangers, but as brothers and sisters bound by the indelible ties of history. The relationship between our nations was not born in ease, nor was it crafted in comfort. No, it was forged in the fires of struggle, tempered by the demands of history, and strengthened by the mutual resolve to build a freer, better, fairer world.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association has, for over a century, stood as a steadfast sentinel of democracy, holding high the torch of good governance, legislative excellence, and the unshakable belief that a nation’s strength lies not in its wealth, nor in its armies, but in the integrity of its institutions and the freedom of its people.
Today, we honor not only the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, but the wider fellowship of nations who, across continents and oceans, uphold the sacred tenets of democracy. Your visit is not a mere diplomatic courtesy; it is a reaffirmation of that sacred covenant, a reminder that no force, no adversary, no challenge—however great—can sever the ties of friendship, history and purpose that bind us.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here as custodians of a cause greater than ourselves, as stewards of a vision that must not falter. For democracy is not an inheritance to be idly cherished, nor is it a prize to be won and forgotten—it is a duty, a charge, a solemn obligation to be upheld with vigilance, with courage, and with unrelenting resolve.
The words recorded in the Hansard in the halls of Westminster in 1960, as Nigeria took its place among the independent nations of the world, still ring true: “We trust that the new independent state of Nigeria will have every good fortune, and that her relationship with the United Kingdom and with the rest of the Commonwealth will be a happy and a close one.”
This was not a mere hope, nor a passing sentiment. It was a call to history, an unbroken pledge that those who come after must uphold. And uphold it, we shall. That is why I am tempted to see this visit as a pilgrimage.
The ties between our nations have not been etched in sand, to be washed away by the tides of time. No, they are carved into the very bedrock of our shared heritage, and in that rock, we shall build an even greater future. The roots of our partnership run deep, so deep that they have withstood the changing seasons of history, standing firm in storm and in sunshine alike.
And what a future we must build! Already, our economic partnership stands as a pillar of progress, with trade exceeding £7.5 billion, and our newly signed Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP) promising to usher in an era of unparalleled opportunity. But let no man think that trade alone defines our bond! No, our connection is richer, broader, and more profound—it is woven into the very fabric of our peoples, in our institutions, in our schools, in the halls of learning where young minds are shaped, and in the corridors of leadership where destinies are decided.
As we stand upon the precipice of a new era, let recommit to the sentiment that this partnership shall not weaken! It shall not waver! It shall not falter! For the challenges before us are many, but our resolve is greater.
In the Tenth National Assembly we have legislated with the steel of conviction. We have labored tirelessly to ensure that democracy is not a mere abstraction, but a living, breathing force that transforms lives.
Legislative Excellence: We are refining our legislative processes to ensure that the laws we craft are timely, transformative, and responsive to the needs of our people. The true measure of a parliament is not the number of bills passed, but their impact on the lives of citizens.
Inclusive Governance: In the spirit of unity, we have embraced the rich tapestry of our nation’s diversity. Our policies reflect the hopes and dreams of all Nigerians, strengthening the bonds that hold us together and ensuring that no citizen is left behind.
Global Partnerships: By deepening our engagement with international bodies such as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, we open avenues for collaboration that enrich our legislative practices and fortify democratic institutions across the globe.
Capacity Building: A nation is only as strong as its institutions. That is why we are investing in the continuous development of our parliamentarians and legislative staff—ensuring that governance is guided by wisdom, experience, and an unyielding commitment to the people we serve.
The road of democracy is no paved highway, but a path of toil, of struggle, of sacrifice. Yet it is a road that must be traveled, a cause that must be fought for, and a legacy that must be preserved! It is not the pursuit of power, but the burden of responsibility. It is not the comfort of command, but the weight of duty. We are not masters of history, we are its servants. And we shall not be found wanting!
Let the world know this: Nigeria and the United Kingdom, bound by friendship, guided by history, and fortified by purpose, shall march forward together! We shall build a future where democracy flourishes, where commerce prospers, where opportunity abounds, and where the rights and freedoms of all people are defended with an unyielding hand.
And so, my friends, let us, as one great fellowship of nations, build a tomorrow that will stand as a beacon to all mankind!
May our partnership be strengthened, may our purpose be unwavering, and may our nations forever walk side by side in pursuit of a greater destiny.
I thank you, and I welcome you once again to Nigeria. God bless you!
