UN chief cautions world leaders against selective obedience to international law as elites gather in Switzerland
ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – As political and economic leaders converge at the World Economic Forum in Davos, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has delivered a strong and timely warning, cautioning that the very foundations of global peace and stability are under increasing strain.
The stern warning released on Wednesday via his X handle as discussions intensify among the world’s most powerful decision-makers, Guterres reaffirmed that the United Nations Charter remains the cornerstone of international relations, describing it as the bedrock of peace, sustainable development, and human rights.
The UN chief warned that when leaders choose to pick and choose which international rules to obey, they weaken the global system and set what he described as a dangerous and perilous precedent.
“When leaders run roughshod over international law,” Guterres cautioned, “they are undermining global order.” He stressed that selective adherence to agreed rules erodes trust among nations and fuels instability at a time when the world can least afford it.
Guterres also raised alarm over the growing influence of a small but powerful group of individuals capable of shaping global narratives, swaying elections, and dictating the terms of public debate.
According to him, this trend represents not just inequality, but a deeper corruption of institutions and shared democratic values.
