KADUNA – The Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR) Media Monitoring Committee has commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the four approved air carriers for the smooth commencement of the 2026 Hajj airlift operation.
This is contained in an interim report issued by the committee and signed by its Chairman, Malam Nasiru Lawal, made available to newsmen in Kaduna.
The committee said it had been monitoring the ongoing transportation of Nigerian pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the coordination of NAHCON.
According to the report, the monitoring team adopted a “no-see” approach to ensure objectivity and independence in assessing the exercise without direct interference or prior notice to stakeholders.
The committee noted that the carriers had largely adhered to approved flight schedules, contributing to a seamless and coordinated offshore airlift operation.
It disclosed that, as at the time of filing the report, a total of 17,362 pilgrims had been successfully airlifted to Saudi Arabia through 41 flight operations.
While commending the progress recorded so far, the committee expressed concern over operational lapses observed at some embarkation centres.
It stated that some officials were not responsive enough to the needs of pilgrims, adding that many pilgrims found it difficult to identify the appropriate personnel to approach for assistance.
The committee, therefore, recommended that NAHCON should make it mandatory for all officials, especially those from State Pilgrims Welfare Boards, to wear clearly identifiable uniforms and tags to improve accessibility and accountability.
The report also raised concerns over the method adopted by some State Pilgrims Welfare Boards in the disbursement of Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) to pilgrims.
According to the committee, the process appeared rowdy and disorganised, thereby exposing pilgrims to the risk of losing their funds, as recorded during previous Hajj operations.
It urged relevant authorities to adopt a more structured and secure approach to the disbursement process.
The committee further called on security agencies to strengthen access control measures at departure centres.
It stressed that only verified pilgrims and authorised personnel should be allowed into restricted areas to ensure safety and orderliness during the exercise.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to providing credible and independent feedback aimed at improving Hajj operations for the benefit of Nigerian pilgrims.(NAN)
