ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s data governance ecosystem and promoting secure, responsible management of data across public institutions.
In his remarks after the signing ceremony on his X handle @Volatunji1, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, described the agreement as another significant milestone in advancing data protection and privacy in Nigeria.
He commended the Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, for his commitment to integrating data protection principles into the National Statistical System.
According to Olatunji, the partnership reflects the shared vision of both institutions to ensure that data, regarded as a critical national asset, is managed responsibly, securely and in compliance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
He stressed that reliable statistics remain indispensable for evidence-based policymaking, economic planning and investment decisions, noting that public confidence in official statistics depends largely on the protection of the personal and sensitive data used in generating them.
The NDPC boss said strong data protection frameworks not only safeguard citizens’ privacy but also enhance public trust, boost investor confidence and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
He explained that the complementary mandates of the NDPC and the NBS would enable both institutions to strengthen data exchange protocols, promote responsible data processing, improve compliance with data protection requirements, enhance data governance, facilitate secure data sharing and deepen capacity building.
Olatunji expressed appreciation to Prince Adeniran and the management of the NBS for their partnership and commitment to building a trusted digital economy.
He expressed confidence that the effective implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding would deliver lasting benefits for both institutions and further strengthen Nigeria’s data governance framework.
