Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has made a compelling appeal to the South East to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his 2027 re-election bid, insisting that the region must prioritize strategic political alignment over unrealistic expectations.
Speaking on Monday, August 4, 2025, Umahi dismissed the notion of an Igbo presidency in 2027 as unfeasible, warning against what he termed “darkening counsel without knowledge” aimed at misleading the people of the South East.
“We must not be deceived again. Mr. President must have the votes of the South East—up to 90 percent—to cement this relationship,” Umahi stated.

According to Umahi, President Tinubu has shown genuine commitment and fairness to the South East, and supporting his re-election is both a matter of gratitude and political foresight.
“If we want to be president one day, we must avoid the politics of hate, misinformation, and empty sentiments. We must support other regions, and with God’s help, one day other regions will support us,” he said.
Umahi emphasized that any hope for an Igbo presidency must be built on unity, collaboration, and long-term strategic alliances rather than divisive politics.
“We are known for hard work and love—not hate. It’s time to rise and educate our people. One day, we’ll be number one. But not in 2027.”
He added that supporting Tinubu to complete a full eight-year tenure, like previous presidents from other regions, is a national interest that benefits all.
Broader Push for Tinubu’s 2027 Bid Gains Momentum
Umahi’s call aligns with recent political moves in the North, where Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, has begun building support among northern political stakeholders, including former lawmakers.
The campaign also gained support from Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, who urged northern elites to back Tinubu’s second-term bid. Omokri warned against repeating the political missteps of 2015, when the North denied Goodluck Jonathan a second term.
“Let Tinubu complete his eight years. Arewa should wait until 2031,” Omokri said in a widely circulated post.
