Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, criticizing his history of switching political parties in pursuit of Nigeria’s highest office. Wike described Atiku’s latest political maneuvers as desperate and lacking credibility ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
During a media briefing on Monday, August 4, Wike openly mocked Atiku’s ambition, declaring that the former VP is “too unstable” to earn the trust of any serious political platform.
“Atiku started with the PDP in 1999, then moved to the Action Congress (AC), went back to PDP, later joined APC, and returned to PDP again—all chasing one thing: the presidential ticket,” Wike said.
The FCT minister, known for his blunt political commentary, didn’t hold back. In a pointed remark, he added:
“If I were his son, I would sit him down and ask: ‘Dad, how can you keep hopping from one party to another at almost 80 years old?’”
Wike Dismisses Atiku’s Coalition With ADC
Atiku recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deep internal divisions. Shortly after, he and a bloc of opposition figures—including Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai—announced the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
But Wike isn’t buying it.
“Let’s be honest: it’s because Atiku knows he can’t get the PDP presidential ticket that he’s pushing for a coalition. The ADC is not about ideology—it’s political survival, nothing more,” he said.
Wike argued that forming a coalition without solid party structures or grassroots support is a weak strategy, especially when the goal is to unseat a sitting president.
“The way the PDP is today, it’s unlikely Atiku would emerge as flag bearer. So now it’s, ‘Let’s form a coalition against Tinubu.’ That’s not how politics works,” Wike asserted.
Atiku Insists ADC Will Take Power in 2027
Despite Wike’s remarks, Atiku has remained firm in his position. Speaking recently, the former VP declared that the ADC-led coalition would “take over power” in 2027, arguing that Nigeria must not become a one-party state.
“In just three weeks, ADC has restructured Nigeria’s opposition. We’re building momentum, and come 2027, we will defeat the APC,” Atiku said.
