Former Nigerian international and ex-African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba, has voiced his confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to bounce back in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Ikpeba, speaking on SuperSport TV’s Monday Night Football, praised Victor Osimhen for his outstanding contribution to Nigeria’s campaign so far, as well as Coach Eric Chelle, whom he credited for bringing a renewed fighting spirit to the team.
The Super Eagles recently recorded a 2-0 away win over Rwanda, thanks to Osimhen’s brace, but were held to a 1-1 home draw against Zimbabwe, with Osimhen again finding the back of the net.
Ikpeba hailed the Napoli striker’s commitment and passion on the pitch:
“I was impressed by Osimhen’s energy and determination. He gave his all, scoring three goals in two games. His frustration after the Zimbabwe draw was only a reflection of his passion for the team and the sport.”
The former striker, who was part of Nigeria’s AFCON 1994-winning squad, also lauded Coach Chelle for instilling resilience in the team:
“If Chelle had been appointed earlier in the qualifiers, Nigeria would probably be in a stronger position. His impact is already visible, and he has brought belief back into the squad.”
Looking back at the Zimbabwe clash, Ikpeba admitted the team created enough chances to win but lacked clinical finishing in front of goal. He, however, remains optimistic that the Super Eagles can revive their qualification hopes in the coming fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa, if they continue to build on their momentum.
