ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Due to credible intelligence about imminent security threats and risks of violence, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong advisory urging the Osun State Government to suspend its planned Local Government elections.
The intelligence gathered from joint efforts of various security agencies reveals that several groups, including political factions and other interest parties, are preparing to incite unrest and disrupt public order during the elections, the statement signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, for Inspector-General of Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja released via official X account of the NPF on Friday said.
In the statement, the NPF highlighted the potential for widespread unrest if the elections proceed under the current volatile conditions. The force stressed that these disturbances could jeopardize lives and property, urging that public safety and national stability must take precedence.
The NPF has pledged full cooperation with other security agencies to ensure law and order are maintained but emphasized that postponing the elections would be the best course of action to avoid unnecessary conflict.
The advisory also referenced legal concerns surrounding the elections, citing a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal on February 10, 2025. The judgment nullified the Federal High Court’s previous decision and reinforced that the planned elections lacked a solid legal foundation. Given the combination of heightened security risks and legal uncertainties, the NPF strongly recommends the immediate suspension of the elections.
The Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic processes and protecting citizens’ lives, urging all political parties and stakeholders to act with restraint and prioritize public well-being during this critical period.
This recommendation comes as Osun State prepares for the highly anticipated Local Government elections, with the NPF working alongside other agencies to monitor the evolving security situation.
