TEHRAN – The navies of Iran and Russia conducted a joint drill on Thursday in the Gulf of Oman and northern Indian Ocean, successfully completing a series of operations.
Special operation teams from Iran’s army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Russia have carried out a simulated operation to liberate a hijacked ship.
It will be supported by aerial reconnaissance, surface operations, and anti-piracy maneuvers, the Iranian army website said.
The exercise also involved Iran’s Alvand destroyer, missile-launching warships, helicopters, landing craft, combat speedboats, and special forces teams, practicing deployment scenarios, offensive formations, and rapid-response coordination.
Spokesman Hassan Maqsoudlou told the semi-official Mehr News Agency that the drill aimed to improve maritime security, enhance bilateral naval cooperation, and strengthen coordination in joint operations.
The exercise follows a recent IRGC drill in the Strait of Hormuz, conducted amid heightened regional tensions with the United States. (Xinhua/NAN)
