Jonathan commends Weah’s selflessness in calling to congratulate Liberia’s President-elect

Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Former president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has commended President Gorge Weah’s selflessness in calling to concede and congratulate the President-elect of Liberia and the demonstrated commitment of all stakeholders to put the interest of the country above personal or party considerations.

Jonathan expressed satisfaction with their sense of co-operation, purpose and patriotism as well as their determination to rally all Liberians to work for the unity, peace and progress of the country.

Jonathan’s commendation was contained in a statement released via his Facebook page, informing of his return to Monrovia as a member of West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Election Mediation Mission where he met with His Excellency President George Weah and the President-Elect His Excellency Joseph Boakai as they begin processes for a peaceful power transition.

Precise Post recalls that Liberia’ preseidential run-off election which held on the 14th of November, 2023 saw Joseph Boakai defeating the incumbent President Weah.

Jobathan’s statement reads in full:

In continuation of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Election Mediation Mission to Liberia’s last general elections, I returned to Monrovia today (Friday) to meet with His Excellency President George Weah and the President-Elect His Excellency Joseph Boakai, as they begin processes for a peaceful power transition.

My consultations with both of them was quite reassuring. I am pleased with their sense of co-operation, purpose and patriotism as well as their determination to rally all Liberians to work for the unity, peace and progress of the country.

I believe all of West Africa has something to learn from Liberian’s elections, especially with President Weah’s selflessness in calling to concede and congratulate the President-Elect and the demonstrated commitment of all stakeholders to put the interest of the country above personal or party considerations.

Precise Post recalls that Jonathan had upon arrival at Monrovia ahead of the run-off election, held consultative meetings with stakeholders.

Upon his arrival ahead of the run-off election, Jonathan stated thus:

Ahead of tomorrow’s Presidential run-off poll, the members of West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Election Mission to Liberia today held consultative meetings in Monrovia with key stakeholders including flagbearer of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), His Excellency President George Weah, candidate of the Unity Party (UP) His Excellency former Vice President Joseph Boakai, Chair and commissioners of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Chair and members of the Joint Security Committee as well as members of the diplomatic corps.

WAEF commends Liberians for the peaceful conduct of the October 10, 2023 first round of elections and charges them to maintain peace, law and order during and after tomorrow’s exercise in line with the Farmington River Peace Accord.
