Abuja, Nigeria — The factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has called on party members currently aligning with other political parties to return to the LP, assuring them of forgiveness if they apologise.
Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday, Abure emphasized that the party remains open to reconciliation and unity, despite internal differences.
Labour Party monitoring defectors closely
Abure warned that the LP leadership is closely observing members “romancing” rival political platforms. While Nigeria’s constitution upholds freedom of association, he reminded members that the party’s constitution strictly prohibits dual party membership.
“The constitution of the party is very clear, and the constitution of Nigeria is equally clear, that you cannot belong to two political parties at the same time,” Abure stated.
“We are watching members associating with other parties, and at the appropriate time, the party organs will decide what action to take.”
Call for peace and reconciliation
The LP chairman extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, urging them to “sheath their swords” and return to the party’s fold in the spirit of unity.
“We are, therefore, using this opportunity to say that our doors are open,” Abure said.
“If they come back and apologise, we are ready to forgive them because we believe that there is no victor and there is no vanquished.”
Labour Party’s growing national influence
Highlighting his leadership achievements, Abure described himself as a leader who has successfully built the Labour Party into a formidable national political force, capable of shaping Nigeria’s political future.
His remarks come amid internal tensions and reports of defections by some LP members to other emerging coalitions ahead of the 2027 general election.
