The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, CN Ogbonna Maurice Uzoma, who was discovered lifeless in his Calabar hotel room barely a month after assuming office.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi revealed the shocking development on Friday, noting that Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) received the report while attending a federal retreat in Maiduguri.

According to the agency, Commander Ogbonna resumed duty on August 18, 2025, and was staying at a hotel temporarily while securing permanent accommodation.

“He was scheduled to lead his officers for official engagements at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, but failed to respond to calls or knocks on his door by 9 a.m.,” the statement said.

When attempts to open the door from outside failed, hotel staff entered through the ceiling and found the commander unresponsive.

The Cross River State Police Commissioner personally visited the scene as investigations into the cause of death began.

To support the probe, NDLEA’s Zonal Commander for Zone 14, ACGN Mathew Ewah, has been redeployed to Calabar.

Marwa extended condolences to the late officer’s family, praising Ogbonna’s dedication and praying for his peaceful rest.
