Nigeria’s passport has recorded a modest but notable rise on the Henley Passport Index, climbing to 88th place in the July 2025 update—up from 91st earlier this year and 97th in late 2023. This reflects a gradual improvement in the country’s global mobility standing.
Despite this upward movement, the actual travel freedom for Nigerian passport holders remains limited. Nigerians can currently enter only 45 countries visa-free or with visa-on-arrival, the same number as in the previous year.
The Henley Passport Index, compiled quarterly by London-based Henley & Partners using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks 199 countries based on the number of destinations their citizens can access without prior visas. It is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative passport strength rankings worldwide.
Slow Progress Amidst Persistent Challenges
Although Nigeria’s passport ranking has improved from 103rd in 2021 to 90th in mid-2023 and now 88th, it still remains in the lower tier both globally and within Africa. Nigeria shares the 88th spot with Ethiopia and Myanmar, ranking above only six African nations: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia.
This static positioning underscores the slow progress Nigeria has made in expanding international travel freedom for its citizens. Meanwhile, several African countries continue to lead the continent with stronger passports and greater visa-free access.

UK Halts Health Worker Visas, Introduces eVisa System
In related news, the UK government suspended the issuance of new Health and Care Worker visas effective July 22, 2025, citing concerns about misuse of the visa sponsorship system and a strategy to reduce reliance on foreign labor in low-wage sectors.
Previously a vital channel for Nigerians and other nationals to enter the UK’s healthcare sector, the visa suspension reflects broader immigration tightening.
However, the UK has recently introduced an eVisa system for Nigerians applying for student and skilled worker visas, starting July 15, 2025. Under this system, physical vignette stickers in passports are no longer issued; instead, visa approval is fully digital, streamlining the process.
