ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – In a strategic partnership, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) is partnering with the United Kingdom’s Counter Daesh Communication Cell (CDCC) to undermine terrorist groups’ narratives and appeals in the media space.
Recall that the CDCC is a unit within the Global Coalition Against Daesh in the UK. Led by Martyn Warr, the cell focuses on countering Daesh (also known as ISIS) through various initiatives, including communication strategies, international cooperation, and research into extremist networks.
The new alliance aimed at crippling extremist messaging, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) is partnering with the United Kingdom’s Counter Daesh Communication Cell (CDCC) to combat terrorist propaganda in the digital space.
According to the information released on the official X account handle of NFIU, during a high-level visit to the NFIU, CDCC representatives were welcomed by Abdulrahman Mustapha, Chief Operating Officer of Intelligence and Security Service Support, on behalf of NFIU CEO Hafsat Abubakar Bakari.
Ms. Bakari emphasized Nigeria’s own struggles with extremist groups like Boko Haram and armed bandits who exploit social media to recruit, spread fear, and glorify their actions.
“The NFIU, as the secretariat of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, is actively working to deny these groups any digital oxygen,” she said, noting that the agency has dedicated teams monitoring and analyzing extremist online content to support national security efforts.
CDCC delegation leader Justin Marozzi underscored the collaboration’s focus on capacity building through media tracking, stakeholder engagement, and targeted workshops. “This is about weakening support for groups like Daesh by striking at the heart of their propaganda,” he said.
He stated that the collaboration will focus on capacity building through research and engagement, including media tracking and analysis, establishing stakeholder networks, and conducting workshops.
Precise Post highlights that with this strategic partnership, Nigeria and the UK have taken a firm stand to reclaim the digital space from the grip of terror.
