Lagos – A Non-Governmental Organisation, Glowing Splints Development Initiative (GSDI), in partnership with the German Embassy, has donated furniture and school items to a public primary school in Alimosho area of Lagos.
The Executive Director of the NGO, Mrs Stella Francis, made this known to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.
The items donated include chairs, tables, school bags, books and writing materials.
Francis said the gesture was to ensure that the public school had good infrastructure and a conducive learning environment.
She said that infrastructure is a very essential part of learning environment and part of attainment of Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 5.
“This objective propelled us to approach the Germany Embassy for partnership and funding to carry out the project.
“The embassy graciously acceded to our proposal and obliged us with this furniture project in this school.
“We look forward to more partnerships for greater impact in the education sector.
“We appreciate the Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) , Mr Wahab Alawiye-King for giving us the privilege of contributing our quota in the enhancement of learning environment in the target school,” she said.
Francis congratulated the beneficiaries and encouraged them to make good use of the items and maintain them.
She also appealed to the school management committee to assist in the sustainability of the project.
“It is our hope that this facility will go a long way in serving the pupils, especially the girl-child, and lead to increase in enrolment, retention and completion,” she said.
In his remarks, Mr Gerald Wolf, Deputy Consular General, German Embassy, Lagos expressed happiness in the support aimed at improving the education environment.
Wolf said plans were on the way to provide computer systems and more infrastructure facilities.
“We will like to collaborate with more non-governmental organisations, civil societies and government with more project initiatives for development of the education system,” he said.
Mrs Odunayo Ogundepo, Head Teacher, African Church Primary School, Ikola, Alimosho, Lagos the recipient, commended the NGO and the German Embassy for remembering and contributing to the development of the school and pupils.
