ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) has strongly condemned reported incidents of violence against women during the recent Ozoro festival in Delta State, describing the situation as a “failure in plain sight” and calling for immediate justice and accountability.
In a statement issued by its Country Vice President, Eliana Martins, and National Publicity Secretary, Chineze Obianyo, the organization decried what it termed a brazen violation of human dignity and a systemic breakdown in the protection of women.
FIDA Nigeria stressed that the reported acts were not a reflection of cultural practices but “plain criminal acts” that must be addressed without delay. The group warned against the misuse of tradition as a cover for violence, insisting that public spaces must never become environments where the safety and dignity of women are compromised.
“The right to personal security is non-negotiable,” the statement read, emphasizing that authorities must act proactively to enforce protections and prevent recurrence.
The organization further called for the immediate identification and prosecution of those responsible, urging law enforcement agencies and community leaders to ensure that perpetrators face the full weight of the law. It also underscored the need to provide protection, care, and support for survivors.
Beyond accountability, FIDA Nigeria highlighted the importance of addressing systemic failures that allowed the incidents to occur. It urged festival organizers, local authorities, and community leaders to implement effective preventive measures and restore public confidence through decisive action.
FIDA Nigeria concluded with a strong warning that such incidents must serve as a deterrent, reiterating that Nigerian laws do not recognize cultural practices that violate principles of justice, equity, and good conscience.
“We will not stay silent. We will not accept excuses. Justice must be served now,” the statement declared.
