WASHINGTON – On the fourth anniversary of the January 6th Capitol insurrection, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reflected on the harrowing events of that day, calling the attack a violent attempt to subvert the peaceful transfer of power and reminding the nation of the deep scars it left behind.
“Four years ago today, our nation watched in horror as a terrorist mob stormed the Capitol grounds and desecrated our Temple of Democracy,” Pelosi said in a statement. “The January 6th insurrection shook our Republic to its core and left behind physical scars and emotional trauma on members of our Congressional community and our Country that endure to this day.”
Pelosi took a moment to highlight the extraordinary bravery of law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect the Capitol, the Constitution, and the integrity of the democratic process. “We must never forget the extraordinary courage of law enforcement officers on January 6th who stood in the breach and stared down the insurrectionists to protect the Capitol, the Congress, and the Constitution,” she said. “We are forever grateful to these heroes whose valor ensured that democracy survived on that dark day.”
Pelosi continued to honor the memory of those who lost their lives or were affected by the attack, praying for the fallen, the afflicted, and their families. “We continue to pray for the fallen, the afflicted, and their families,” she said.
The former Speaker emphasized that the events of January 6th serve as a powerful reminder that the strength of democratic institutions lies in the courage and commitment of those entrusted with their care. “The parable of January 6th reminds us that our precious democratic institutions are only as strong as the courage and commitment of those entrusted with their care,” Pelosi remarked.
In closing, Pelosi reaffirmed the nation’s resolve, recalling the defiant actions of lawmakers who returned to the Capitol to certify the election results despite the chaos. “On January 6th, we gave proof through the night that our Flag was still there by returning to the Capitol to certify the election results and demonstrate to America and the world that our Democracy prevailed,” she said.
As lawmakers gathered once more beneath the dome of the U.S. Capitol, Pelosi called on all Americans to continue protecting the nation’s democratic values, echoing President Abraham Lincoln’s words: “the last best hope of earth.”
