A few days ago we reported that Samsung was considering sticking with LPDDR5X RAM for the base Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ to keep costs down instead of moving to the next-gen LPDDR6 standard.
A new report from Korea today adds more detail, and it suggests Samsung is planning a two-tier memory strategy for the entire S27 family.
According to the source, Samsung _still wants_ to equip the high-end models — the Galaxy S27 Ultra and the new Galaxy S27 Pro — with LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.1 storage. However, even on those phones, the upgrade might not be standard.
The rumor claims only the higher RAM / storage SKUs could get LPDDR6 + UFS 5.1, while the base 256GB versions of the Ultra and Pro would remain on LPDDR5X + UFS 4.1. If true, it would be the first time Samsung has segmented memory type by storage tier.
For the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+, the source says it’s now pretty much locked: No LPDDR6, no UFS 5.1. They will stay on LPDDR5X and UFS 4.1 across all variants.

1. 256GB is finally the new baseline. The vanilla S27 finally drops the 128GB option. That’s long overdue for a 2027 flagship.
2. The Pro is a weird middle child. The S27 Pro gets the Ultra’s 1TB option, but it’s paired with only 12GB RAM, while the Ultra’s 1TB gets 16GB. The Pro is rumored to be a smaller Ultra (like an iPhone Pro vs Pro Max strategy), so capping it at 12GB seems like artificial segmentation.
3. Why the split? Cost and supply. LPDDR6 and UFS 5.1 are expected to be significantly more expensive and in short supply in early 2027. Samsung is reportedly trying to keep the S27 and S27+ price from ballooning, and using LPDDR5X lets them do that. Reserving LPDDR6 for the top-tier Ultra/Pro 512GB/1TB models would let them market the new tech without taking a huge margin hit on every unit.
As for the other specs mentioned, a recent 3C certification in China has also revealed battery and charging upgrades: the Galaxy S27 Pro is listed with a 5,200 mAh battery and the Galaxy S27 Ultra with a 5,700 mAh battery, both with 60W wired charging — a big jump from the 45W cap Samsung has kept since the S22 Ultra.
Of course, all of this is still unconfirmed and we’re 6+ months away from launch, so take it with a pinch of salt.

So there’s nothing really groundbreaking here, aside from the fact that the vanilla model finally starts at 256GB too. The Galaxy S27+ and Galaxy S27 Ultra have the exact same options as their predecessors, while the Pro inherits the Ultra’s 1TB option but pairs it with just 12GB of RAM for some reason, even though it’s supposed to be the smaller Ultra.
Anyway, all of this is obviously not confirmed officially in any way, so do take it with a pinch of salt at least.
