Sebioba Football Club mourns former goalkeeper, Peter Rufai

LAGOS- Coach Abdulrahman Gbadamosi of Sebioba Football Club, Ibadan, ,on Friday expressed sadness over the demise of iconic goalkeeper, Peter Rufai,

The legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper, fondly called “Dodomayana” died on Thursday,  after a prolonged illness that had kept him out of the public eye in recent years

Gbadamosi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that it was a tragic development for the entire football family in Nigeria and beyond.

Gbadamosi said that while alive, Rufai was exemplary and a role model to several generations of Nigerian goalkeepers.

” Rufai was a phenomenal goalkeeper and an ambassador of Nigerian football. His legacy will live on,” he said.

Gbadamosi described Rufai as a “legendary goalkeeper” who made the country proud with his exceptional skills.

“His death has left a void in Nigerian football, but his impact on the sport will be remembered for generations to come.

“He was known for his agility, leadership, and shot-stopping ability, which earned him recognition as one of the best goalkeepers in African football history.

“He notably played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and represented the country in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998).

“Late Peter Rufai was one of  first Nigerian goalkeepers to forge a successful European career, playing professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain,”he said.

He added that the late footballer was known for his leadership skills, inspiring a generation of young Nigerian footballers with his dedication and professionalism.

“On behalf of Sebioba Football Club, I commiserate with the NFF President,  Ibrahim Gusau and of course, the family and friends of the deceased.

“To the family and loved ones of the late Peter Rufai, may you find solace in the cherished memories of his remarkable life and career.

“May his legacy as a legendary goalkeeper and ambassador of Nigerian football bring you comfort and strength during this difficult time.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his contributions to the beautiful game continue to inspire future generations of footballers and fans alike,” he said.

Q Rufai became the first Nigerian goalkeeper to score a goal, converting a penalty in a 6-0 win against Ethiopia in 1993, and helped SC Farense qualify for the UEFA Cup in the 1994-95 season.

After retirement,  Rufai remained active in football development, mentoring young players and advocating for sports education in Nigeria. (NAN)
