KADUNA – Sen. Sunday Katung (PDP-Kaduna South) is set to move a motion on the floor of the Senate seeking urgent intervention for the revival of Nigeria’s textile industry, with particular focus on the Kaduna-Kano axis.

‎Mr Joseph Midat, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Senator disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement in Kaduna.

According to the statement, the motion will draw the attention of the Senate and relevant federal agencies to the collapse of textile mills that once made the Kaduna-Kano corridor the hub of Nigeria’s textile industry.

‎The statement noted that Katung would lead debate on the economic, employment and social security implications of the sector’s decline and advocate legislative and policy measures aimed at restoring the industry.

‎It recalled that Kaduna and Kano states were historically home to more than 180 textile mills, which provided employment for thousands of Nigerians and contributed significantly to the nation’s economy.

‎According to the statement, the collapse of the industries resulted in massive job losses, capital flight and a sharp decline in local cotton production.

‎It added that the Senate debate is expected to focus on critical challenges facing the sector, including inadequate power supply, smuggling, limited access to finance and the need to strengthen the cotton value chain.

‎“The motion seeks to chart a pathway for the revival of the textile industry as a catalyst for industrial growth, job creation and economic diversification,” the statement said.

‎The statement further noted that the initiative aligns with Katung’s four-pillar mandate of robust legislation, effective oversight, strategic constituency development and human capital investment for Southern Kaduna and Nigeria as a whole.‎(NAN)
