Nigerian writer and social commentator Solomon Buchi has criticized the organizers of the BET (Black Entertainment Television) Awards for naming American rapper and songwriter GloRilla as the Best Gospel Artist.
Buchi described the decision as “shameful” and indicative of a deeper issue within the gospel music industry. He argued that awarding an artist primarily known for secular and provocative content undermines the spiritual foundation of gospel music.
His remarks have sparked intense debate online, with many agreeing that the gospel genre has strayed from its original purpose of ministry and spiritual impact. Buchi claimed that the gospel music industry “became a scam ever since it stopped being ministry,” stressing that faith-based art should not be compromised by entertainment values or mainstream popularity.
While some fans have defended GloRilla’s involvement in gospel collaborations, others have questioned how award selections are made at major events like the BET Awards. Critics are now calling for clearer standards in gospel music recognition, urging industry stakeholders to prioritize spiritual authenticity over trending appeal.
Buchi further stated that GloRilla, who often dresses provocatively and reveals sensitive parts of her body, did not deserve to win the award.
