2023 Presidency: Anybody deceiving you can continue deceiving you! (2)

By Tiko Okoye In Part 1 of this series, I established the concrete foundation for preening myself on the 100-percent manifestations of my predictions of outcomes of presidential elections in Nigeria since 1999. I’m very much, in intent and purpose, in the same place as the metaphorical red-neck lizard that rather immodestly nods its head in self-acknowledgement of its dexterity in landing on all fours on the ground from a dizzying height when nobody else deigns to applaud the feat. The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines electioneering as the activity of making speeches and visiting people to try to persuade them to vote for a particular politician or political party in an election.” Vote is defined as “a formal choice that is made in an election in order to choose or decide something.” Public opinion is defined as “the opinions that people in society have about an issue.”   We are in the digital age hence any candidate and/or party that has mastered how to leverage on what has become a very powerful, if not the most powerful, tool for influencing …

2023 Presidency: Why Yorubas will reject APC to vote Atiku – Akinlade

The deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade, has described Yorubas in the South West as very intelligent individuals who would not vote based on ethnic sentiments in 2023. Akinlade said the people of the South West would rather reject the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that has “put them under extreme hunger and poverty.” He made this statement at an extended meeting of the PDP in Yewa South Local Government, held at the Engr. Tetede Hall, Ilaro, Ogun State. The 2019 governorship candidate said some individuals are already ‘dreaming’ that the South West votes are already in the kitty for the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu; saying, however, that this is not true. According to Akinlade, the PDP is already in control of two out of the six states in the South West, expressing confidence that Ogun would join the list in 2023. “Atiku Abubakar will win in 2023. I am saying this based on available data. In 2019 when the APC had President Muhammadu Buhari as a returning candidate and …

2023: Why cost of conducting election is high in Nigeria – INEC Chairman

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) explained why the cost of conducting elections in Nigeria is high. He said this on Friday when he appeared at the ‘The Editors’ Forum’ in Lagos. It was organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors at De Rembrandt Hotel, Awolowo Way Ikeja, Lagos. He listed some of the reasons as “cost of logistics, highly-secured ballot papers, allowances for personnel and others.” In his words: “In France, the ballot paper is like an A4 sheet of paper, because it is unthinkable that anybody in France will snatch the ballot paper. “But here in Nigeria, we print ballots papers in currency quality and we entrust them to the Central Bank of Nigeria. “The ballot papers will now be moved with all the protocols and security according to the movement of the national currency, just to protect the process. “This is not going to be done cheaply. So, we pay for lack of trust in the system,” the INEC boss said. He added, though, that Nigeria’s elections were not the most …

2023 Election: INEC denies backdating documents to accommodate APC’s Lawan, Akpabio

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has yesterday, debunked speculations that it may have illegally bent backwards to backdate its documents in favour of candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for Yobe North and Akwa Ibom North-West. The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who currently represents Yobe North and former Niger Delta Affairs Minister, Senator Godswill Akpabio, from Akwa Ibom North-West, had lost out of plans to return to the Senate next year as the electoral umpire said the duo did not participate in the respective senatorial primary elections. Both men were presidential aspirants at the June 8 primary election of the APC, which held days after the party had already concluded its senatorial primary elections across the country. However, an online report had yesterday, accused INEC of re-enlisting the two names in its files as bonafide candidates of the party. But when contacted, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, told Vanguard that the report was false. The Abuja Federal High Court has fixed September 7 to hear a suit seeking to disqualify the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu from participating in the 2023 elections. Four APC chieftains had approached the court and sought Tinubu’s disqualification from the presidential election because he allegedly submitted false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. In a 33-paragraph affidavit in support of the suit deposed to by one Ibiang Miko Ibiang, the plaintiffs said Tinubu lied in an affidavit presented to INEC in 1999 in which he claimed to have attended St Paul Aroloya Children Home School, Ibadan -1958-64, and Government College, Ibadan -1965-68. Ruling on an ex-parte application, the judge, Ahmed Mohammed, granted an order for substituted service on Tinubu. The plaintiffs’ counsel, Goddy Uche informed the court that substituted service has become necessary because all attempts to serve the presidential candidate proved abortive. Why Peter Obi May Become President In 2023 By Default

By Farooq Kperogi Facts I have uncovered from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that Labour Party’s Peter Obi may become Nigeria’s president next year by default because Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, candidates for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively, have violated the Electoral Act 2022, which may cause them to be disqualified if Obi sues them. The Electoral Act 2022 requires political parties to notify INEC of their intent to conduct primary elections at least 21 days before the date of their convention. It also requires parties to submit their membership registers to it at least 30 days before their primary election. The APC didn’t meet the first requirement and the PDP failed the second requirement. The Labour Party met both. Documents an INEC insider shared with me (which you can find on my blog at www.farooqkperogi.com) show that the APC didn’t notify INEC of its intent to conduct its primary election 21 days before its convention. Section 82 of the Electoral Acts says the penalty for this infraction is outright …
