ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has reacts to the new 5% tax on refined fossil fuel sales, including petrol and diesel announced by the federal government, expressing worry as to when the economic hardship of Nigerians will be truly alleviated.

Obi, who took to his X handle on Wednesday to condemn the new policy by the federal govermment, lamented that Nigerians will now pay a 5% tax when buying their everyday fuel or diesel at a time when millions can hardly even afford the cost of transportation.

The former Anambra State Governor reminded that just yesterday, Mr. President boasted that Nigeria has met its revenue target for the year, yet instead of easing hardship, the government is imposing more burden on Nigerians.

Adding that even the so-called alternative, CNG, has become unaffordable – rising from about ₦230 to ₦450, while the promised subsidies on the CNG have quietly vanished, Obi said.

“If our revenues are truly ‘excessive’ as claimed, should they not first be used to fund education, healthcare and pulling Nigerians out of poverty? Why tax citizens who cannot even breathe anymore?”

“This 5% fuel tax should wait until Nigerians begin to see tangible improvements in their lives from all the many promises from Mr. President.”

He slams the federal government and reiterated that
leadership is not about giving a burden, it is about reducing suffering, it is about care and compassion.

He emphasized that the new energy era must go beyond technical milestones and emissions targets to deliver real benefits for people everywhere, especially those on the front lines of climate impacts.

“The new energy era must deliver equity, dignity and opportunity for all.”
