The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly considering offering former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, should he agree to return to full-time partisan politics and assume a more active leadership role within the party.

This development was revealed by Daniel Woyengikuro, the PDP’s National Financial Secretary, during a recent interview in Abuja. He described Jonathan as a towering political figure whose influence and legacy continue to command respect across party lines.

“He is not just a former president; he is the leader of the party now,” Woyengikuro stated. “Aside from [former President Olusegun] Obasanjo, the next most prominent leader in the PDP is Goodluck Jonathan.”

He further noted that the party sees Jonathan as the most viable option to lead the PDP to victory in 2027, given his political experience, national appeal, and unifying persona.

High-Level Talks Underway
According to Woyengikuro, the PDP leadership is already engaged in high-level consultations with Jonathan’s close allies in a bid to persuade him to re-enter active politics. These discussions are said to be part of broader efforts to reposition the party ahead of the next presidential election cycle.

“Nigeria has reached a critical juncture. We need experienced and visionary leadership to rescue this country — for our generation and those to come,” he said.
“When we talk about Southern Presidency, someone like Goodluck Jonathan stands out.”

When asked if the party would grant Jonathan an automatic presidential ticket should he officially declare his interest, Woyengikuro was unequivocal in his support.

“Absolutely. I stand firmly by that. You can quote me anywhere — I support an automatic ticket for him. We need him to salvage both the PDP and the nation.”

Seyi Makinde Also Backed as Key Leader
Woyengikuro also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, describing him as a vibrant leader capable of bridging generational divides within Nigeria’s political landscape.

“These are the two leaders I support going into 2027 — Goodluck Jonathan and Seyi Makinde. One represents experience and national unity, the other, youthful energy and innovation,” he added.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, made a compelling case on Wednesday, July 30, during an interview with Trust Radio, insisting that Tinubu deserves the same two-term opportunity granted to his predecessor, the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

“This president is a Nigerian. He deserves the same two terms that Buhari had. Let’s not sacrifice the country for personal ambition,” Onanuga said.

‘Tinubu Till 2031’ Gains Momentum
Amid growing speculation about Tinubu’s political future, insiders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) suggest the ruling party is strongly considering offering the president an automatic ticket to run in 2027. Speaking at a two-day interactive session in Kaduna themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity”, Akume praised Tinubu’s leadership, describing his achievements as “foundational and remarkable.”

“President Tinubu has spent two years and two months in office, and his achievements are already significant. I urge northern politicians to wait until 2031 and not derail the progress already being made,” he said.

Opposition Pushback and Insecurity Warnings
Despite growing support within the ruling party, opposition parties have begun mobilizing against Tinubu’s reelection prospects, with critiques focusing on governance, economic reforms, and national insecurity.

Adding a spiritual dimension to the debate, Primate Elijah Ayodele, founder of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, warned President Tinubu to be cautious about political defections and internal sabotage.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele alleged that elements within the presidency, including individuals inside Aso Rock, may be complicit in worsening security conditions—potentially to undermine the president’s second-term bid.

“Insecurity may be used as a tool to disrupt his ambition. There are forces within the system working against him,” the statement read.
