ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the reported arrest of some Nigerians in Akwa Ibom State for allegedly identifying with the Obidient Movement.
Obi, who spoke against the backdrop of arrest of some obedient members, said the development should concern Nigerians who believe in democracy, freedom and the rule of law.
In a statement, Obi argued that independence would have little meaning if citizens could not freely express themselves within the bounds of the law without fear.
He said the reported arrests were particularly troubling if the individuals were detained merely for identifying with the Obidient Movement, noting that such expression was a constitutional right.
“As we continue to reflect on Nigeria’s Independence, we must remember that independence means very little if citizens cannot freely express themselves, within the bounds of the law, without fear,” Obi said.
He warned against a situation where individuals who once described themselves as freedom fighters would become defenders of oppression after attaining positions of authority.
According to him, those who previously complained about injustice could become comfortable with injustice when it was perpetrated against people with whom they disagreed.
“One of the greatest tragedies of our society is that people who once described themselves as freedom fighters can become defenders of oppression when they eventually occupy positions of authority,” he said.
Obi maintained that Nigeria’s independence should translate into freedom from fear, injustice, intolerance and abuse of power.
“Our independence must ultimately mean freedom from fear, injustice, intolerance and abuse of power,” he said, adding that Nigeria must belong to all citizens.
