Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has formally submitted a proposal for a single-term presidency to the emerging opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The revelation was made by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement Worldwide, during a ceremony in Gombe State where Obi was conferred with the honorary title of ‘Sarki Maskan’ (War Hero) by the Pantami community. The title was awarded in recognition of Obi’s service and dedication to the people of the area.

Tanko expressed optimism that the coalition—comprising top political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark—would align with Obi’s vision for a single four-year tenure. He confirmed that the proposal has been officially submitted for consideration.

ADC Emerges as Preferred Platform for Opposition Alliance

The opposition coalition has reportedly adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its official platform ahead of the 2027 general election, shelving earlier plans to register a new party due to timing and legal constraints with INEC.

As part of its leadership structure, the coalition has named David Mark as interim National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun State Governor, as Secretary. Former Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, has also been appointed as the coalition’s interim National Publicity Secretary.

The leadership decisions were reached during a closed-door meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, July 1. Sources familiar with the development disclosed that the appointments were unanimous and aimed at building a strong front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.

Peter Obi’s commitment to serving only a single term if elected has become a key element of the opposition coalition’s broader strategy to present a unified and selfless leadership alternative. Tanko noted that, “This is what should have happened in 2023. But it’s never too late. The willingness of opposition leaders to come together and make personal sacrifices is a sign of maturity and renewed political direction.”

ADC Set for Formal Unveiling

The newly adopted ADC platform and its interim leadership are expected to be officially unveiled at a high-level event in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2. The opposition coalition aims to mobilize Nigerians around an inclusive and reform-driven agenda, setting the stage for a formidable challenge to the Tinubu administration in 2027.

Despite mixed reviews of President Tinubu’s administration since its inception, opposition leaders argue that the current government has failed to deliver meaningful reforms, citing worsening economic hardship and governance challenges.

Why ADC Was Chosen

Sources revealed that the ADC was selected over other previously proposed parties—including the African Democratic Alliance (ADA) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP)—due to concerns over INEC registration timelines and internal crises within the SDP.
