Tennis: Sports Minister hails Nigerians for securing promotion to Davis Cup World Group II

ABUJA FCT – Sports Minister Senator John Owan Enoh on Sunday congratulated Nigerians for securing promotion to Davis Cup World Group II after defeating Ghana in the first two rubbers at the ongoing Group III Africa Qualifier event.

Senator Enoh who took to his X account to hail Nigerians, noted that the advancement speaks a lot to our progress and growth in the game of tennis.

He therefore thanked the players and charged them to keep playing with their hearts and talking with their racquets, reminding that getting to play on the global stage means alot.

Precise Post recalls that Nigerian team represented by Christopher Bulus and Michael Emmanuel, earned a promotion after defeating Ghana’s Abraham Asaba and Isaac Nortey. Both matches ended with identical scores of 6-3 6-2 in favour of Nigeria. The promotion-clinching victories occurred on Saturday, concluding a five-day competition in Abuja.

While Nigeria advances, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire face relegation to Group IV. Benin Republic will maintain their position in Africa Group III. Zimbabwe and Namibia have also earned spots in World Group II following their strong performances at the event.

The promotion to World Group II marks a significant milestone for Nigerian tennis on the international stage. It provides the country’s players with an opportunity to compete at a higher level and gain valuable experience against stronger opposition. This success could potentially inspire more young athletes to take up the sport.
