President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Sanae Takaichi on her historic emergence as Japan’s first female Prime Minister, describing her victory as a remarkable milestone that reflects her long-standing contributions to Japanese politics and governance.

Takaichi, a veteran lawmaker and former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, was elected after securing majority support in Japan’s parliament, breaking a decades-long gender barrier in the leadership of the world’s fourth-largest economy.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and strategic relations with Japan under Takaichi’s administration.

In a personally signed congratulatory letter, President Tinubu extended warm wishes on behalf of the Nigerian government and people, highlighting the shared values that underpin Nigeria–Japan relations.

“Your Excellency, on behalf of the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend to you my warmest congratulations on your election as the first female Prime Minister of Japan,” Tinubu wrote.

“Your victory as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party and as Prime Minister is a remarkable expression of the confidence reposed in you by the people of Japan. It also testifies to your decades of dedicated service to your nation and political party.”

Tinubu expressed optimism that Nigeria and Japan would continue to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and education under her leadership.

“As you assume this mandate, please rest assured of Nigeria’s continued goodwill and support for Japan,” he said.
“Both countries have maintained a deep, productive, and strategic relationship over the years. I look forward to working with you to build on this foundation and deepen our mutual partnership.”

President Tinubu concluded his message by wishing Prime Minister Takaichi a successful tenure in office.

“I am reassured that Nigeria–Japan relations will continue to blossom under your capable and visionary leadership. Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem and best wishes for your good health and personal well-being,” the President stated.
