ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, where they secured their seventh continental title — and fifth in a row.
The Rena Wakama-led team delivered an impressive performance on Sunday night, defeating Mali 78-64 in a fiercely contested final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, released on his X-account handle, President Tinubu praised the team’s “skill, resilience, determination, and teamwork,” which he said were key to their latest continental success.
“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud,” the President said. “Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work.”
Despite a slow start and a first-quarter loss, D’Tigress rallied to dominate the game and etch their names in African basketball history. President Tinubu noted the significance of their accomplishment, highlighting the team’s record-setting fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.
He also extended commendations to Head Coach Rena Wakama and her backroom staff for their “exemplary leadership,” as well as the Nigeria Basketball Federation for its unwavering support.
“The Federal Government and Nigerians will never forget the sacrifices and remain grateful for the highly elevating performances,” Tinubu assured, promising continued support for the team as they prepare for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments in March 2026.
The President concluded his message by expressing eagerness to receive the team and their trophy in Abuja, wishing them a safe journey home.
