ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has underscored the enduring importance of cultural exchange as a subtle yet influential tool of diplomacy, noting that it often shapes mutual understanding beyond the confines of formal negotiations.
Speaking on the sidelines of official engagements in Spain, Tuggar said cultural diplomacy provides a unique platform for nations to connect through shared heritage, creativity, and historical narratives. As part of the visit, officials of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the Nigerian delegation on a guided tour of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, one of Europe’s most renowned cultural institutions.
Tuggar, who disclosed this when he took to his X handle @YusufTuggar on Friday, highlighted that the tour showcased iconic works by celebrated masters including Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, and Hieronymus Bosch.
According to Tuggar, the museum’s extensive collection of drawings, prints, sculptures, and decorative arts reflects Europe’s shared cultural memory and its lasting influence on global artistic traditions.
He described the Prado as a powerful instrument of cultural diplomacy, demonstrating how art and history can foster dialogue, mutual respect, and deeper international engagement. Tuggar noted that such institutions play a vital role in projecting national identity and values on the global stage.
Drawing a parallel with Nigeria’s own efforts, the minister pointed to the Atrium Gallery of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, which uses art and historical exhibitions to tell Nigeria’s national story while strengthening diplomatic ties. He emphasized that both initiatives highlight how culture can serve as a bridge between nations, enriching diplomatic relations and promoting greater understanding among peoples.
