In a communiqué signed by its President, Dr. Ewanosetin Benjamin Uyi, and released by its General Secretary, Dr. Komolafe Ayo, after the August Ordinary General Meeting held on August 20, 2025.
The association highlighted major challenges, including the non-payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), exclusion from the Lagos Medical Cooperative Society, lack of call meals for doctors on duty, and the need for electronic voting in future elections.
The doctors condemned the continued delay in MRTF disbursement, noting its adverse impact on members’ ability to register for professional exams.
The association also resolved to form a reconciliatory committee to address disputes with the Lagos Medical Cooperative Society and push for fairer engagement terms.
ARD LUTH described the situation as unacceptable and warned that management must resolve the issue within four weeks or face further action.
However, they said a committee will be set up to explore the introduction of E-voting, ensuring transparency while preventing conflict of interest among electoral candidates.
The association called on Chief Medical Director Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo to intervene decisively, stressing that members’ welfare cannot be compromised.
The statement read, “The Congress of ARD LUTH expressed significant concern regarding the non-payment of MRTF, despite the frequent positive reassurances provided thus far. The repercussions of this non-payment include the inability of eligible members to register for the West African College exams, insufficient preparation due to financial constraints, and the necessity for members to cover costs out of their own pockets, potentially resulting in low examination turnout and/or failure.
”The ongoing issue between the Lagos Medical Cooperative Society and ARD LUTH was also thoroughly examined by our members, who expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which ARD LUTH was excluded.
”The absence of call food for members undertaking call duties at LUTH was extensively deliberated upon and condemned by our members.”
”The necessity for the initiation of E-voting in the upcoming election was also deliberated upon,” it said.
According to the association, the Congress reached a unanimous decision that the President of LUTH should collaborate with other center presidents who have not received the MRTF, aiming to address this matter collectively rather than individually.
Meanwhile, the Congress resolved to establish a reconciliatory committee, comprising the current executives, past leaders of the association, and members of the executive body.
“This committee will engage with the Lagos Multipurpose Cooperative Society to forge a new term of engagement, resolve past issues, and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” it said.
The association also expressed its disapproval regarding the absence of call food for its members performing call duties at LUTH.
“It was unanimously agreed that a letter should be sent to the management, outlining the repercussions of this issue and its impact on our members. Additionally, a four-week ultimatum, commencing on 22/08/25, has been issued to the management to address the matter of call food at LUTH.”
While acknowledging the importance of E-voting, the Congress concurred that a committee should be established to examine its complexities and devise a sustainable solution to the challenges it may present during implementation.
It said, “This committee should comprise members from various departments with expertise in information and communication technology (ICT). Furthermore, it is recommended that individuals intending to run for executive positions be prohibited from joining this committee to prevent any form of bias or prejudice. Additionally, the Congress suggested that this committee collaborate with other centers that have successfully conducted their elections using this method.
