The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reassured Nigerians that visa and passport services will continue despite the partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, the embassy clarified:
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information. At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. embassies and consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations, as the situation permits.”
The embassy further explained that its social media platforms would only provide urgent safety updates until government funding is fully restored.
This assurance comes amid growing concerns among Nigerians that the shutdown in Washington could disrupt visa processing, student travel plans, and other consular services.
The shutdown was triggered after U.S. lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to reach a budget agreement, forcing several federal agencies to suspend operations. The dispute largely revolves around Democratic demands for increased healthcare funding, which Republicans have resisted.
While defending the shutdown, Trump argued that it could help him cut down on Democratic-backed programs. Essential services such as the military, postal service, and welfare programs like Social Security and food stamps remain unaffected.
However, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that as many as 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed daily without pay until a funding deal is reached.
This is the first U.S. government shutdown since the record-breaking 35-day closure nearly seven years ago, during Trump’s first term. Historically, Congress has often faced tense last-minute budget standoffs, but most have been resolved before leading to full shutdowns.
For clarity, a government shutdown occurs when Congress and the President fail to agree on a spending plan, forcing non-essential agencies to halt operations. Essential services such as defense, postal operations, and welfare programs usually continue.
The U.S. has recorded 21 government shutdowns since 1976 when the current budget system was adopted.
The embassy advised Nigerians to visit travel.state.gov for timely updates on consular services, including visa appointments and passport processing.
