JALINGO – The Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University Professor Sunday Bako has disclosed that the University has zero tolerance for cultism, drug abuse and other vices often indulged in by young people.

Professor Bako who disclosed this in a chat with Daily Sun said that the University has set up an anti drug abuse unit that is staffed to specifically ensure that students do not use prohibited drugs and other substances anywhere in the school and to apprehend those indulged in the act and hand them over to the appropriate authorities.

Bako said that that the University has strengthened the internal security mechanism of the University to ensure the security of lives and property of students and staff and is collaborating with the host community and security agencies to ensure the safety of students who are staying off the campus.

“I can assure you that we do not take the issue of cultism lightly at all. We are very strict and have zero tolerance for it as a policy. Luckily, the students also understand our posture and that explains why you hardly hear of incidents of cultism on the campus.

” We understand that most times, these children indulge in these acts under the influence of illicit drugs. And so we have created a narcotics unit specifically dedicated to tackling the issue of drug abuse involving our students whether they stay on campus or off the campus.

“You are aware that a degree is awarded to a person when he or she is found worthy in both character and learning. So it is not just about passing all the necessary examinations. You must be found worthy in character as well to merit our degree.

“We use to have incidents of theft and break ins in school here, so we have rejigged our internal security mechanism to make sure that both students and staff stay safe and their property is also secured. We are also liasing with the host community and security agencies to ensure that our students who are staying off the campus are also safe. There is not much we can do for those staying off campus but our collaboration with security agencies is yielding good results. A number successes have been recorded.

“Our goal is to transform Taraba State University Jalingo to a model University and I can tell you that we are on course. It may not come easy but we have laid the foundation and are very quickly building on it” he said.
