ABUJA- The Federal Government says it is committed to providing the enabling environment for female engineers to excel in their profession.
This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by Mr Chima Akwaja, Deputy Director of Information, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) .
Akwaja quoted Mr Khalil Halilu , Executive Vice-Chairman of NASENI, as saying that the Federal Government would always support women-led innovations.
Halilu spoke at the inauguration of second phase of the Developing Engineering Leaders Through Her (DELT-Her) proposal portal.
He said the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT) would continue to be a major partner with NASENI in the efforts to support female engineers.
He described DELT-Her as a movement that encouraged women to lead in promoting the interest of women engineers while NASENI would offer financial and mentorship supports.
“DELT-Her is fuelling a wave of women-led solutions to Nigeria’s toughest challenges,” Halilu said.
He said the female engineers had been involved in success stories such as AI-driven soil monitoring, drone-based security systems, and eco-friendly brake pads.
He said that over N70.5 million was awarded to six female engineers in 2024 with more support planned in the second phase of 2025.
The chairman of PICTT, Dr Mohammed Dahiru, said it remained the flagship project to empower women, break gender barriers, and reshape Nigeria’s technological future.
Dahiru said there was need to raise women participation in engineering because they constituted just five per cent of engineers in Nigeria and 28 per cent globally.
According to Dahiru the initiative will not only fund successful applicants but also provide mentorship from industry leaders. (NAN)
