The Nigerian Senate has passed the ₦2.2 trillion 2026 statutory budget for the Federal Capital Territory Administration for second reading.

The proposed ₦2.201 trillion appropriation bill outlines the financial plan for the Federal Capital Territory from January 1 to December 31, 2026.

A breakdown of the budget shows that the largest share is allocated to capital projects. Capital expenditure accounts for ₦1.6 trillion, while ₦378 billion is earmarked for overhead costs and ₦165.8 billion for personnel expenses.

Leading the debate, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the budget would sustain ongoing infrastructure development, including expansion of public utilities, development of satellite towns, and improvements in waste management systems across the capital.

Also supporting the bill, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described the proposal as well structured, highlighting its focus on education and road infrastructure. He also commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for ongoing development projects in Abuja.

However, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru urged lawmakers to carefully review the revenue projections and spending details to ensure fiscal discipline.

The budget proposal was transmitted to the National Assembly of Nigeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Following the debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory and Area Councils for further scrutiny, with a report expected within one week.
