The Labour Party has lambasted the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, stating that he’s restless over Peter Obi’s growing popularity ahead of the 2023 election.
The party’s acting National Publicity Secretary, Arabambi Abayomi, stated this on Friday while reacting to Atiku’s claim that Obi cannot cause any upset or perform a miracle in next year’s election.
Atiku, during an interview with Arise TV, dismissed the chances of his former running mate, stating that the Labour Party has no structure to win an election.
Atiku said, “I really don’t expect the Labour Party to take as many votes from the PDP as people are suggesting. We could have seen it in the last election in Osun State. What was the performance of the Labour Party?
“This is a party that doesn’t have a governor, doesn’t have members of the national assembly, doesn’t have members of the state Houses of Assembly. And politics in this country depends on structures you have at those various levels; at the local level, at the state level and at the national level.
“It is very difficult for a miracle to happen simply because Peter Obi is in the Labour Party.”
Reacting during an interview with PUNCH, Arabambi said Atiku’s remark against Obi showed that the ex-Anambra State governor posed a threat to the PDP candidate’s presidential ambition.
He added that the fact that Obi was being constantly attacked showed that he had become a threat to the PDP.
“All that the presidential candidate of the PDP and its candidate talk about now are Obi and the Labour Party because Nigeria’s structure has changed for the Labour Party.
“I say so because, for the first time in history, we have the NLC and the TUC declaring that workers are members of the Labour Party. Our popularity has sent shivers down their spine; they are not only jittery; they are also confused,” he said.
