LAGOS – The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Ikoyi, Lagos, is stepping up its fight against cryptocurrency-related crimes through specialised training for its detectives.
The training was held on Friday at Sunday Adewusi House, Ikoyi, in collaboration with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) and supported by the United States Consulate in Lagos.
Details of the programme were disclosed in a statement on Friday by the unit’s spokesperson, DSP Ovie Ewhubare, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit, Mr Eloho Okpoziakpo.
Okpoziakpo said the initiative is part of efforts to reposition the PSFU to effectively tackle emerging financial crimes.
He noted that the programme aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, to build an intelligence-led, proactive, and technology-driven police force.
The intensive training exposed officers to advanced techniques in cryptocurrency tracing, digital asset analysis, and modern investigative strategies for tackling cyber-enabled financial crimes.
Participants also gained insights into the structure, usage, regulatory frameworks, and potential misuse of cryptocurrencies.
“The rise of digital currencies has introduced new dimensions to financial crimes. It is imperative for our officers to stay ahead of these evolving trends to ensure effective investigation and prosecution,” he said.
The workshop featured interactive sessions where participants engaged experts to deepen their practical understanding of crypto-related investigations.
Okpoziakpo reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the PSFU into a globally recognised investigative unit driven by professionalism, innovation, and adherence to international best practices.(NAN)
