UMUAHIA (PRECISE POST) – Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called for a partnership with Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to revive and modernise the historic Akwete weaving industry, while expressing support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms despite their short-term challenges.
In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, Otti described the First Lady’s maiden visit to Abia State under his administration as more than a ceremonial event, saying it demonstrated her personal commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and empowering women.
The governor commended Senator Tinubu for taking a keen interest in the renowned Akwete fabric, describing it as a priceless cultural legacy that must be preserved through innovation and technology.
According to him, while tradition remains important, modern production methods are essential to ensure the handwoven fabric remains competitive in the global market and to safeguard its originality.
Otti disclosed that since assuming office in 2023, his administration has prioritised the revival and modernisation of the Akwete weaving industry.
He revealed that the state government has already developed a proposal for a modern production hub for the Akwete Weavers Cooperative Society.
The proposed facility, covering about 14,800 square metres, is expected to support the entire value chain of the industry, including apprenticeship, skills acquisition, production, finishing and improved market access.
The governor said the design of the project has been forwarded to the First Lady, expressing optimism that both parties would work together to bring the initiative to fruition.
He reaffirmed that Abia State remains welcoming to all Nigerians irrespective of ethnic background or political affiliation, stressing that good governance should rise above partisan considerations.
Otti also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as bold economic reforms initiated by the Federal Government.
While acknowledging that the reforms have imposed short-term hardships on Nigerians, he maintained that they are creating opportunities for states to invest more in infrastructure, strengthen their economies and improve the welfare of citizens.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient and optimistic, expressing confidence that the policies would ultimately deliver sustainable prosperity.
The governor therefore thanked the First Lady for her commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and promoting the empowerment of women, expressing hope that she would return to Abia to witness the progress made on the proposed Akwete production hub.
