Former Barcelona and Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has announced the death of his wife, Bartina Koeman, after decades of marriage.
Koeman confirmed the loss in a heartfelt tribute, describing Bartina as his “beautiful wife” and the family’s “dearest mother and grandmother”.
“With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mother and grandmother,” Koeman said.
The former Netherlands international did not disclose the circumstances surrounding Bartina’s death, while the family has asked for privacy as they mourn her passing.

The announcement has prompted messages of sympathy from across the football community, particularly in the Netherlands, where Koeman remains one of the most prominent figures in the country’s football history.
Barcelona expressed its condolences to the former manager and his family following Bartina’s death.
“FC Barcelona and its supporters send their deepest condolences and affection to Ronald Koeman and his family for the passing of his wife, Bartina Koeman. May she rest in peace,” the club said.
Barcelona holds a significant place in Koeman’s football career. He enjoyed a distinguished playing spell with the Spanish giants before eventually returning to the club as manager several decades later.
Koeman managed Barcelona from 2020 to 2021, taking charge during a period of transition at the club. During his time in charge, he guided the team to the Copa del Rey title in the 2020/21 season.

As a player, Koeman represented several major European clubs, including Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona. He was known as a defender with an exceptional ability to score goals, particularly from free-kicks and penalties.
His career reached an international high point when he helped the Netherlands win the European Championship in 1988.
After ending his playing career, Koeman moved into coaching and went on to manage a number of clubs and national teams across Europe.
His managerial career has included spells with Ajax, Southampton, Everton and Barcelona, among several other clubs. He has also coached the Netherlands national team on more than one occasion.
His association with the Dutch national team has further strengthened his standing in the country’s football history, having represented the side as a player before later taking charge as its manager.

Away from football, Koeman and Bartina had been married for decades and had three children together.
The couple also became grandparents, with Koeman referring to Bartina in his tribute as the family’s “dearest mother and grandmother”.
