ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise peace, unity and justice as the country prepares to enter another electoral season.
Jonathan made the call in a 66th Independence Day message posted on his X handle on Thursday, as Nigeria marked 66 years of independence.
The former president said the country had faced numerous challenges since gaining independence but had continued to overcome them through collective resilience.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith and hope while working together to build a better nation.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity,” Jonathan said.
He called on citizens to ensure that their actions during the period safeguard peace, unity and justice, stressing that the years ahead held immense possibilities if Nigeria could harness its diversity and abundant natural and human resources for sustainable development.
Jonathan also appealed to Nigerian youths and other citizens to maintain hope and courage while working towards a prosperous future for generations to come.
He, however, said achieving such a future required leaders at all levels to demonstrate greater responsibility and patriotism.
According to him, the country must confront its pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and strict adherence to the rule of law.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he said.
Jonathan also urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence and remain committed to building a stronger and more united nation.
Precise Post recalls that President Bola Tinubu in his independence day broadcast said “Nigeria has corrected its course. We have passed through our own Red Sea. This is not the time to look back. Let us go forward together, with faith in ourselves, faith in our country, and faith that the sacrifices we have made will yield their reward.”
“The Promised Land before us is a Nigeria of abundance and opportunity; a nation where prosperity is broadly shared, where every child can dream beyond the circumstances of his birth, and where our country’s immense promise is finally reflected in the lives of our people.”
“Our destination is in sight. Our foundations are strong. Our direction is clear. So let us go forward. No looking back.”
