ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has praised Africa’s resilience, vast potential and growing influence on the global stage as the continent marked this year’s Africa Day celebration.
In a message commemorating the annual event released on his official X handle on Mnday, Guterres said Africa continues to demonstrate remarkable strength and unity despite the painful legacy of slavery and colonialism that shaped much of its history.
According to him, African nations and peoples have transformed adversity into a shared sense of purpose and progress, positioning the continent as an increasingly important force in global affairs.
“On Africa Day, we celebrate the continent’s abundant strengths, resilience, potential and growing influence on the world stage,” the UN chief stated.
He noted that the people of Africa had overcome the destructive consequences of slavery and colonialism, forging unity and determination in the face of historical challenges.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to supporting African countries in their quest for peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
“The UN is proud to work with African countries to build a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future for all Africans and our world,” he said.
Precise Post recalls that Africa Day is celebrated annually on May 25 to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union, and to highlight the continent’s achievements, challenges and aspirations for greater unity and development.
