ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –   Fear has gripped the bureaucracy of the National Assembly following a sweeping directive by the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, Godswill Akpabio, ordering the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to cancel all recent appointments made by the commission.

The directive was issued after a closed-door meeting between Akpabio, the chairman of the commission, and a few commissioners.

Sources said the Senate President instructed the commission to ensure that all future appointments strictly comply with the principles of competence, seniority, and federal character, a move aimed at restoring transparency and fairness in the appointment process.

In a related development, Akpabio has approved the appointment of Patrick Giwa, a former Clerk to the House of Representatives and current NASC commissioner, as Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission Establishment Committee.
Giwa’s appointment is expected to inject fresh momentum into the Establishment Committee, which is responsible for handling promotions and appointment-related matters within the National Assembly bureaucracy.

Under Giwa’s leadership, the committee is expected to play a central role in ensuring that appointments and promotions across the National Assembly management reflect a balanced mix of seniority, merit, and federal character.

Patrick Giwa is a seasoned bureaucrat with decades of experience in the Nigerian civil service. He was confirmed as the substantive Clerk to the House of Representatives by the NASC in June 2020, a position he held with distinction.

His emergence as chairman of the Establishment Committee is widely seen as a recognition of his experience, institutional knowledge, and commitment to public service.

As the NASC begins to implement the Senate President’s directives, attention will be firmly fixed on how the commission navigates the delicate balance between competence, seniority, and federal character in reshaping the National Assembly’s administrative structure.
